Tour the 1892 School Building and Museum

The Kutztown Area Historical Society has been working to restore the 1892 School building since its purchase in 1979. Major projects such as installing a new heating system, replacing the roof, exterior maintenance, and interior renovations were financed through the generosity of the Kutztown community with the help of a few government grants. Much more remains to be done, however, as the building is quite large and, like most buildings over one hundred years old, requires constant care. The building is one of the best examples of Victorian architecture in the country and was placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings in June 1980.

The museum houses a variety of local artifacts including two needlepoint samplers sewn by two Franklin Academy (a 19th century Kutztown school) students from 1842 and 1843, a newspaper announcing the death of George Washington from 1799, original Keith Haring drawings, 19th century textile implements (loom, spinning wheels, yarn wheels), antique toys and books, a Pennsylvania long rifle made by local gunsmith Jacob George in 1817, antique quilts, a replica of a 1930’s school room, antique farm implements, antique fire equipment, 19th and early 20th century garments, and many other historically important items.

Tours of the museum can be made during one of our events or by appointment.  Call (610) 683-7697 or email info@kutztownhistory.org to make an appointment.
